An ABRSM piano lesson in progress at the Piano with Norbert studio in Harrow

ABRSM is the most widely recognised music exam board in the UK, and the one most Harrow families ask us about. We prepare students for the full graded path, from Initial Grade through to Grade 8, as well as the Performance Grade for those who would rather not sit the supporting tests.

We enter students when they are genuinely ready, not when the calendar says so. That is the single biggest reason our pass results sit where they do.

What we cover

The whole exam, prepared

Three pieces from the current syllabus, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading and aural tests, all worked on steadily through the year rather than crammed before the date.

Grade 5 theory, sorted

ABRSM asks for Grade 5 theory (or practical musicianship) before the Grade 6 practical. We build the theory in alongside the playing so it never becomes a roadblock.

Repertoire that suits the student

Pieces chosen from the current list to play to each student's strengths, so the exam shows them at their best rather than fighting an awkward fit.

A realistic timeline

Most students move up roughly a grade a year with consistent practice. We will give you an honest read of where you are at the trial.

We cover Initial Grade and Grades 1 to 8, plus the ABRSM Performance Grade. Lessons run at our Harrow studio (HA2), in your home across HA1 to HA8, or online.

Common questions

Do I need Grade 5 theory before Grade 6 piano?

+
Yes. ABRSM requires Grade 5 in Theory, Practical Musicianship or a solo Jazz instrument before you can take the Grade 6, 7 or 8 practical exam. We prepare the theory alongside your playing so it is ready in time.

How long does each grade take?

+
With consistent practice, most students progress around one grade per year, though it varies with age, starting point and how much they practise. We give an honest estimate at the trial.

What is the Performance Grade?

+
It is an ABRSM exam made up of four pieces and a programme, with no scales, sight-reading or aural. It suits students who love performing but would rather not sit the supporting tests. We prepare both routes.

What is your pass rate?

+
Over 90% of our students pass ABRSM, Trinity and RSL exams with merit or distinction. We credit that to entering students only when they are ready.
